COORS SET TO SUPPORT 2008 NEWPORT POOL OPEN

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Molson Coors have agreed to support the 2008 Coors Newport Pool Open and the Worthington’s Newport Doubles Open for a second year.

The competition has grown in stature over the last two years, since it was established by NDP Publicity Services in 2006. Entries for both competitions opened this week and will close on Friday, July 4th, with flyers and entry forms already being sent out to every pool-playing club and public house in the Newport area.

“We are delighted to support the Coors Newport Open and the Worthington’s Doubles competition,” said Tanya Allin, account manager at Coors Brewers Ltd. “Pool is extremely well supported in the Newport area and this competition grows in stature every year.”

The Newport Pool League has been a success this season and event organisers are hopeful that all registered players will support both the singles and doubles competitions, in addition to new players and individuals who have not played league pool this season.

There has already been interest from five new teams for next year’s Newport Pool League, but the Coors and Worthington’s competitions are purely for individuals.

Rules are the same as previous years and the final prize fund will depend upon numbers entering each competition. A portion of the pot will be donated to Newport Cottage Care Centre, as was the case in 2006 and 2007, and the remainder will be split between first, second and third overall in both the competitions.

“I would like to think that we will attract at least 64 singles players and 32 pairs this year,” enthused event promoter Neil Perkins. “There are six weeks for players to get their names down, so there are no excuses for not seeing the forms!”

Entry for the Coors Newport Open will be £5 for the singles competition and £10 for the doubles competition. The draw for first round matches will be made on Monday, July 6th and there will be around 21 days for each round of matches to be completed. Each match will be played over the best of five frames.

Home drawn players will again be permitted to choose the venue and away players will need to contact them to arrange the mutually convenient date and time of the fixture. Finals’ night will be at the Audco Sports & Social Club, in conjunction with a Coors promotion, on Tuesday, October 21st.

“It was like a dream for me to win the first Newport Open,” insists Paul Trevor, the 2006 champion. He did not enter last year, but Audco league player Colin Pink is the defending champion and sure to return to try and keep his title. Andy Lycett and Anthony Heathcote are the reigning Worthington’s Newport Open Doubles champions.
