AUDCO CLOSE IN ON NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE TITLE

King’s Head crash to Junction A and Shakespeare

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Only a mathematical miracle will prevent the Audco from clinching the 2007/2008 Newport & District Pool League title, after they trounced Sutherland Muxton 6-0 and closest rivals King’s Head came crashing down to earth with a 5-1 defeat at the Shakespeare. One win from their final three games will secure the Coors Trophy for the Audco, even if the Chetwynd End concern manage to win their last three games by 6-0 margins.

In a repeat of the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy semi-final, Audco were in awesome form to dismiss the Muxton side. Paul Trevor and Anthony Heathcote paved the way with wins over Dave Worrall and Luke Hayward and Colin Pink secured an eight-ball clearance to send Kim Worrall packing.

The unbeaten Andy Lycett clinched the all-important fourth frame with a win over Charlie Hayward, but Kim Worrall very nearly pulled a frame back. He was on for a sensational eight-ball clearance in frame five, only to make a foul near the finish. Lycett and Tom Sayce duly clinched the rack and Pink and Trevor wrapped up the match in the sixth frame.

The King’s Head are in danger of losing second place to the Shakespeare and even Lilleshall Sports Centre. They crashed to a 5-1 defeat at Junction A last week, losing all four singles matches to an inspired Sion Richards, Steve Roycroft, Keith Rogers and Hyla Marklew and the Shake duly repeated the scoreline in their crunch clash.

Luke Jones put the home side one up by pipping Mick Collins, only to see Ian Perry level the scores with a win over Don Brennan. But the Shakespeare’s golden duo, Ben Clews and Matt Hester, were firing on all cylinders and beat Irene Whittington and Neil Hallett to lead 3-1.

Richard Young and Carl Fletcher played well against Whittington and Perry in the fifth frame and Fletcher sank the all-important black to seal the three points and push the Shake to within two points of second place. Clews and Hester wrapped up the match with a final frame win over Collins and Hallett.

LSC still have eyes on third and even second place and won two matches last week to move back into contention. Neil Perkins, Nick Clewley and Neil Hazeley won three singles matches and Perkins and Clewley clinched their doubles match against Gerry Nunn and Alan Pritchett to see off the Navy Club 4-2 in a rearranged match, which eased some of the pain caused by the recent cup final defeat.

But the Lilleshall side were in inspired form at the Boat Inn and collected a second successive 6-0 win over the Gnosall side. Nick Clewley started the car with a tricky win over Nigel Sandbrook, Neil Perkins forced Dave Lakin to lose his patience to make it 2-0 and Ben Longstaff pipped Mark ‘Changa’ Chambers to earn at least a draw.

An out-of-sorts Greg Heathcote secured the win with victory over Mick Hall and both doubles matches also fell to LSC, who remain just three points behind the King’s Head with three games remaining.

In the other fixtures last week, the Wheatsheaf saw off the brave challenge of the lowly New Inn to claim a 4-2 win and Junction B got sweet revenge on the Navy Club – who had beaten them 6-0 recently – by taking a 4-2 win at Norbury.
