AUDCO STEAM AHEAD AS NAVY CLUB CRUSH JUNCTION B

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Audco continued their rampant run towards the 2007-2008 Newport Pool League title with a 5-1 demolition of the Wheatsheaf at Chetwynd Aston.

Only Anthony Heathcote blotted his copybook in a blood and thunder performance, where youngsters Tom Sayce and Jack Jones both staked a claim for a place in Audco’s line-up for the crunch cup final clash against Lilleshall Sports Centre on May 7th.

The win leaves the Bellman’s Yard team 11 points clear of the King’s Head, although the former league leaders do have three games in hand. Paul Trevor beat Chris Cooper to get the league leaders off to a winning start and Sayce continued his run of good form by beating Ian Trevor.

The unbeaten Andy Lycett made it 3-0 against Al Harvey, in what the refereeing Paul Trevor said must go down as one of the longest and most tedious games in the short history of the Newport Pool League.

Fortunately for the Wheatsheaf, Nigel Sandbrook prevented the Audco for gaining a bonus point by beating Anthony Heathcote, although Jones was brought in to replace the hapless Heathcote and he and Lycett made it 4-1. Trevor and Sayce rounded off the rout with victory in the final rack.

The Navy Club have hit a serious purple patch of form and demolished Junction B to collect a sensational bonus point at what is quickly becoming a tough place to claim even a point. Gerry Nunn again inspired his troops to take a stunning win and several teams will not be relishing the trip to Bellman’s Yard for their remaining away games this season.

The Junction A continued their run of impressive form with a 4-2 home win over the Boat at Gnosall and are now Shakespeare’s closest challengers for third place.

Lilleshall Sports Centre drew 3-3 with the Sutherland Muxton, in a game that was switched from LSC to the Telford venue because of the sheer volume of spectators for the Champions League game at Lilleshall.

Without regulars Nick Clewley and Neil Perkins, Neil ‘Hurricane’ Hazeley and Dave Price returned to the LSC starting line-up, although the team’s preparations for the game took a major setback when Greg Heathcote somehow managed to get bleach in his eyes before his singles’ match.

Ben Longstaff, Hazeley and a resurgent Price shone for LSC in the singles, although Heathcote’s calamitous singles’ match and a double whammy in the final pairs’ racks wrapped up a miserable evening for the Heathcote brothers and enable Muxton to claim a point.

Price got the better of Kim Worrall with some excellent long range potting, but Heathcote lost to Luke Hayward as the match was tied at 1-1. Longstaff duly disposed of Dave Worrall after a snooker-dominated marathon and Hazeley beat Charlie Hayward to give LSC a 3-1 lead.

But Muxton hit back in both the doubles racks to secure a vital point, their cause helped no end when LSC slipper Price clipped the black going for a yellow and the white dropped into the pocket.

The Shakespeare were made to work hard for three points against the New Inn, but were rewarded with a 4-2 away win and maintained third position in the table.

Would teams ensure that all match forms are returned to the Railway Tavern after games to ensure that league tables and player statistics are as accurate as possible. Please also text the result to 07831 123153.
