AUDCO ROLL ON AS NAVY CLUB STUN MUXTON
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Audco placed one hand on the 2007-2008 Newport Pool League title with a convincing 4-2 home victory against arch rivals King’s Head, but the upset of the evening was a 4-2 away win for the lowly Navy Club at the in-form Sutherland Muxton.
Norman Riley got the away side off to a stunning start with a shock win over Luke Hayward and the veteran Navy Club side needed to adjust their pacemakers when Gerry Nunn rocked the Muxton establishment by disposing of Kim Worrall in frame two.
Not surprisingly, Muxton hit back quickly and Charlie Hayward and David Worrall levelled the scores by edging out Dennis Holland and Alan Pritchett. But the Navy Club found a run of luck that deserted them when they played so well against the Audco earlier in the season and Riley and Nunn put the visitors into a 3-2 lead.
Already guaranteed at least a draw, Pritchett and Holland went for the jugular in the final frame and stunned David Worrall and Charlie Hayward to clinch a sensational three points for the Bellman’s Yard team to lift them well clear of the bottom two.
In the table-topping clash, former Newport Open champions Colin Pink and Paul Trevor got the Audco off to the perfect start with solid wins over Matt Collins and Ian Perry, Trevor stamping his authority on the red-faced Perry by leaving him with seven balls on the table. “I’m on fire at the moment,” said Trevor. “I’m cueing really well. That’s three matches this week, snooker, pool and the Albion/Wolves game, where we’ve come out on top.”
But Mick Collins is in a rich vein of form at the moment as well and edged out Anthony Heathcote to give the King’s Head a glimmer of hope. The fourth rack was crucial and it was the best of the match, with Irene Whittington missing a tricky black cut into the corner to seal the frame and level the match against the unbeaten Andy Lycett. It wasn’t meant to be, however, and Lycett was given one crucial chance to seal the frame and put Audco into a 3-1 lead.
Pink and Trevor wrapped up the match with a crucial fifth frame win over Mick Collins and Whittington, but Matt Collins and Perry restored some pride for the former league leaders by beating Tom Sayce and Jack Jones in the final doubles frame. “It wasn’t our best of nights at the office,” groaned Matt Collins.
The battle for third place is intensifying by the week and Shakespeare and Junction A settled for a 3-3 draw at Upper Bar. Luke Jones and Matt Hester put the home side 2-0 up with fine wins over Sion Richards and Steve Roycroft, but Keith Rogers is a canny player and pulled a frame back for the visitors by beating Richard Young. Ian Mason levelled the scores with a win over Ben Clews and the match was nicely poised at 2-2 heading into the doubles.
Mason and Rogers guaranteed the Junction a point by beating Clews and Hester – to cap the Shake golden duo’s second doubles’ defeat in as many weeks – but the experienced Carl Fletcher and Jones sealed the draw by beating Junction captain Hyla Marklew and Richards in the final rack.
Earlier in the week, the Boat returned to form and did both Lilleshall Sports Centre and the Shakespeare a favour by beating Junction A 4-2 at Gnosall in a game that had been originally postponed in January. Shakespeare now hold third place and the Junction A move up to fourth, but LSC have a crucial game in hand against the New Inn.
