RAMPANT AUDCO ENJOY BOAT CRUISE AND DRIFT AWAY

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Audco edged ever closer to their maiden Newport Pool League title with a nervy 5-1 victory against the Boat Gnosall at Bellman’s Yard.

Nigel Sandbrook got the visitors off to a perfect start with a closely-fought win over Jack Jones, but Anthony Heathcote levelled the scores when Mark Changa went for a four-ball clearance, fouled and left Heathcote two shots to clinch the frame.

Paul Trevor made it 2-1 to the home side after winning a cagey affair against Boat skipper Dave Lakin with a tidy three-ball clearance. But Mick Hall broke off in the fourth frame, only to see the rampant Andy Lycett clear the table with some sensational play.

“Mick needs to learn how to break,” quipped Lakin, as Lycett continued his unbeaten form in the singles this season to top the individual player rankings. “Andy usually chokes on the last two balls,” admitted Heathcote, “so we weren’t counting out chickens!”

Heathcote and Trevor made it 4-1 to the home side with a doubles win over Sandbrook and Hall and Tom Sayce and Lycett clinched a straightforward final frame against Lakin and Changa to make it five.

Former league leaders, the King’s Head, emerged unscathed from a 5-1 win at the lowly New Inn to stay in the hunt for the league title. “After last week’s defeat it was important we got back on track,” said team spokesman Matt Collins.

“We rose like a phoenix from the ashes. Fair play to the New Inn though, they regrouped to win the last frame on the black and prevent us taking the crucial bonus point. The away game at the Audco on April 16th will be a block buster now!”

The Wheatsheaf hosted Junction B at Chetwynd Aston and escaped with a 4-2 win after a closely-fought match, but Lilleshall SC’s game against the Navy Club was postponed because of a family funeral involving one of the key Navy Club players.

Would teams ensure that all match forms are returned to the Railway Tavern after games to ensure that league tables and player statistics are as accurate as possible. Please also text the result to 07831 123153.

Teams that have not paid annual fees are asked to do so within the next seven days, as end of season trophies need to be arranged and ordered.
