KING’S HEAD CONTINUE TO LEAD NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The King’s Head extended their lead in the

2007-2008 Newport & District Pool League after a confident and hard-earned 5-1 win against Lilleshall Sports Centre last Wednesday evening.

Ian Perry set the ball rolling with a solid win against a stubborn Neil Perkins, with cautious safely play dominating a tactical game. Greg Heathcote pulled one back against an out-of-sorts Irene Whittingham, but a comfortable win for Neil Hallett against Ben Longstaff set the King’s Head on their way. When Dave Price was seven-balled off the break by Phil Himley the writing was on the wall and Matt Collins and Hallett wrapped up the match in the doubles.

The Junction A continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 5-1 victory over Norbury rivals Junction B. They now trail the King’s Head by a single point, although the two teams need to rearrange their crunch match that was postponed because of a clash with the recent England v Croatia football debacle.

The Wheatsheaf were held at home by a gritty Shakespeare side, but the Junction A got the better of the Sutherland Muxton to force their way into the top three. The Junction B also beat the Wheatsheaf to kick-start their season and the Wheatsheaf scrambled a point at the Boat in Gnosall last Wednesday. There are three match results missing to date.
