NEWPORT POOL OPEN SET FOR
GRIPPING TUESDAY NIGHT FINALE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The 2007 Worthington’s Newport Pool Open will reach a dramatic conclusion at the Audco Sports and Social Club in Newport next Tuesday evening (October 23rd). After 12 weeks of intense, and sometimes heated, competition four singles players and two doubles pairs will battle it out to become champions.
The King’s Head’s Irene Whittington, the Audco’s Andy Lycett and John Williams and the Tavern’s Colin Pink will contest the singles’ semi-finals, while Ian and Rob Perry will take on Anthony Heathcote and Andy Lycett in the Worthington’s Newport Doubles Open final.
All games will be held over the best of five frames and the third place play-offs in both competitions will also take place during the evening.
Whittington ensured that Ray Talbot’s Open dream ended in a haze in just four frames. Last year’s beaten finalist had disposed of the only female in the competition on the way to the final in 2006, but Irene avenged her defeat to reach the semi-finals in four frames with some clinical potting and superb positional play.
Snooker supreme John Williams upset the in-form Ian Perry in four frames to book his place in the semi-finals at the Audco. Pink downed Neil ‘Hurricane’ Hazeley in three frames to join him in the semi-finals.
Russ Woodhouse endured a topsy-turvy end to his challenge for honours in the singles’ competition. After seven-balling his opponent Rob Perry in the first frame of his last 16 round, he became embroiled in a marathon safety clash, with Perry taking no risks. The snooker player eventually won the deciding fifth frame to set up his semi-final clash with Lycett.
But the Audco player was in no mood for mercy and Woodhouse lost the crucial quarter-final match in three frames, as Lycett booked his place at finals’ night.
Both Perry players redeemed himself themselves in the doubles, when Rob and father Ian perforated the challenge of Terry Taylor and G Taylor from the Junction Inn in Norbury. The pair won the match in three straight frames to book their place in the final, although the Taylors live to fight it out for third place and a cash prize next Tuesday evening.
Lycett and Heathcote beat Neil Cartright and Ian Fearnley in three straight frames to confirm the second place in the final.
The Worthington Newport Open Finals’ night will take place from 19.00hrs on Tuesday, October 23rd at the Audco Sports and Social Club in Newport.
