Heathcote brothers crash out of Newport Pool Open
NEWPORT (Shropshire): There were several huge upsets in week three of the 2007 Worthington’s Newport Pool Open, with fancied singles players Greg Heathcote, his brother Anthony and last year’s semi-finalist Kim Worrall all sent crashing out of the tournament. But Ben Longstaff was in superb form to book his place in the last 16.
King’s Head player Andy Bowsher overcame a tricky trip to the Sutherland Arms at Muxton to overcome Charlie Price in four frames and confirm his place in the last 16.
Last year’s beaten semi-finalist Kim Worrall lost to the much fancied Andy Lycett in a five-frame thriller, but the surprise of the round feature a fascinating contest between the Audco’s Anthony Heathcote and the Tavern’s Trevor Smith. Heathcote was hotly-tipped to progress to the last 16, but came up against an in-form Smith, who won a thrilling decider to book his place in the second round.
Greg Heathcote couldn’t repeat the superb form he showed in last weekend’s doubles match and bowed out to the Tavern’s Dave Wilkinson in three straight frames, the Tavern man making up for his shock exit from the doubles competition. “I was woeful,” groaned the youngster.
Heathcote’s doubles partner Ben Longstaff was in scintillating form, however, and survived a tricky visit to the King’s Head to beat Mick Collins three-nil to cap a superb result. Audco’s John Williams overcame stiff resistance from Muxton’s Charlie Hayward to progress to the last 16 in five frames.
Steve Garmson won a controversial encounter against Lilleshall Sports Centre’s Dave Price in four frames. Garmson strolled into a two-frame lead, but prematurely potted the black in the third frame and the mistake was picked up by a spectator. After several heated moments the frame was awarded to Price, but Garmson sealed victory in the fourth frame.
The Tavern’s Russ Woodhouse booked his place in the last 16 for the second successive season with a 3-1 win over Stuart Murray.
There were a couple of matches in the Worthington’s Newport Open Doubles competition. The 2006 Newport Open champion Paul Trevor paired up with Audco’s John Williams to dispose of Tavern landlord Ian Roberts and partner Trevor Smith in four frames.
Both Muxton’s Kim and David Worrall bowed out of both the singles and doubles tournaments after losing in four frames to Mick Collins and Edd Keenan from the King’s Head.
