ANDY LYCETT HITS FORM TO
REACH POOL QUARTER-FINALS
Taylor duo rock Dean and Adams in the doubles
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Newport snooker player Andy Lycett was the first player to book his place in the quarter-finals of the Worthington’s Newport Pool Open, after winning a tantalising encounter against Steve Garmson in four frames at the Tavern.
Lycett showed his potting prowess in frame one, but gave a glazed Garmson a chance for a six-ball clearance in frame two, only for the local window cleaner to smear his chances of winning on his final colour. Lycett made it two-nil soon afterwards, but Garmson potted his way back into the match in frame three, only for Lycett to clinch victory in a lacklustre fourth rack.
Three of the late-running first round doubles matches were decided last week: Colin Pink’s and Jimmy Kelly’s patience was rewarded with a walk-over victory over Lilleshall’s Dave Price and Neil Hazeley, when the disorganised Price and Hazeley ran out of time to arrange the fixture.
But Terry Taylor made up for his defeat in the singles competition by teaming up with his son from the Junction Inn to ruin Stewart Adams’s and Andy Dean’s chance of reaching the last eight. The match went to a decider, but the Taylor family duo held on to book a fascinating second round clash against Pink and Kelly at the Junction.
The pick of the three doubles games featured Lycett and partner Anthony Heathcote, against John Owen and Mick Ashforth from the Junction Inn in Norbury. Lycett was the class of the quartet in frame one, as the Audco duo sped into a one-frame lead. But Ashforth, who lost to Mat Collins in the singles, fought back from almost certain defeat in frame two and put together a superb six-ball clearance to level the match.
The third frame was dominated by safety play, but Owen made a crucial mistake and handed two shots to Lycett, who looked set to clear the table. But he jawed a crucial black and left Ashforth to clear two balls - one yellow and the black for the win.
But the Junction player wedged the vital black in the jaws of the pocket and could only watch agonizingly as Heathcote capitalised to seal the rack. A tedious fourth frame was eventually settled by some superb potting by Lycett, as the Tavern duo secured a deserved win and their places in the last eight.
Second round matches in both competitions must be completed by September 30th. Winners must send notification of the result by text message to 07831 123153, clearly stating the match score and players’ names.
Meanwhile, the Worthington Newport Open Finals’ night has been moved back a week to Tuesday, October 23rd at the Audco Sports and Social Club in Newport.
