POOL LEAGUE GEARS UP FOR FINALS’ NIGHT AND PRIZEGIVING
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The curtain will be brought down on another successful Marston’s Newport Pool League on Friday evening (July 8th), when the Royal Navy Club hosts the annual prize giving and the two finals for the Neil Clark Memorial and Neil Clark Consolation trophies.
Wrockwardine Wood Football Club go head-to-head with King’s Head A to decide the outcome of the Consolation trophy, won last year by Shakespeare A in a tie-break frame with the Pheasant.
The match should be very evenly matched with Shropshire county players Craig Williams and Neil Pugh likely to feature for the Telford side, as well as County Seniors player Kevin Genner. Fellow County star Bobby Perry tops the list for the Newport side, ably assisted by bit-part country player Ed Keenan, pub landlord Mick Collins, Trevor Smith, young Alex Davidson and multiple Newport Women’s Open champion Irene Whittington.
Market Drayton’s Stag are firm favourites to retain the main Neil Clark Memorial Trophy against Honeysuckle Hawks, particularly with in-form county starlet George Allen amongst their ranks and Mick Manning – the league’s top player in the statistics – playing a supporting role. Kyle Smith and Ricky Leese are sure to be on hand to bolster a team that also includes former Newport Open champion Neil Dale and Charlie ‘the butcher’ Hayward.
The Hawks come into the game fresh from having their trousers pulled down by the hosting Royal Navy Club on the final night of the league season. If potting tycoon Marcus Thomas can control his natural enthusiasm and Jason Shilcock can deliver some of the form he has shown on occasions this season, the Hawks could swoop on any Stag mistake and kill off their prey.
Gary Lewis was in the winning side for the Shakespeare last season and Mark Groom, ‘Suckle landlord Andy Bowsher and young Ross Richards-Jones will be hoping to shine under the pressure of the public spotlight.
The first match gets underway at 19.15hrs and is followed by refreshments, the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy final and the annual awards prize giving. Everyone is welcome to attend and £1 will be charged per person towards the cost of food supplied by the host venue on the night.
