NRBL’S POOL DOUBLE DREAM FINALLY SPLUTTERS TO A HALT

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Two stunning victories by the Honeysuckle Hawks in the space of 24 hours put paid to Newport Legion’s quest for a pool double in the Marston’s Newport Pool League.

The Hawks stunned NRBL to reach their first ever Neil Clark Memorial final in a shock result at the King’s Head last Tuesday evening and then plucked all the Legion’s feathers in a devastating 5-1 league hammering the following evening.

Gaz Lewis was in inspired form for the underdogs in the cup match, Jason Shilcock outwitted Ant Heathcote to clear the table and Stu Morrey and Lewis held their nerve at 3-2 to clinch the last doubles. The Hawks have now booked a potential main final clash with either the Sutherland Arms or the Stag.

The two teams met again at the Honeysuckle the following evening and the Hawks went one better, dropping only one frame to inflict a defeat on Mick Beech’s shell-shocked side that leaves them floundering seven points behind Market Drayton’s Stag and seriously at risk of losing out on second place to the chasing pack. ”Missing blacks cost us tonight,” groaned Beech. “But all credit to the ‘Suckle.”

The Stag squeezed past Junction A in a grueller in Norbury to stay firmly on course for a second successive title heading into their remaining six matches. The home team changed their order, but George Allen and Mick Manning made it 0-2 with wins over Steve Roycroft and Gordon Sidebotham.

Neil Dale made it three against Hyla Marklew, but Sion Richards gave the canal siders hope by ousting Charlie Hayward. Roycroft and Sidebotham stunned Allen and Hayward to make it 2-3, but a Manning clearance in the sixth saved the day and the two points for the Stag.

The Sutherland Arms worked hard to overcome WWFC with the loss of one frame in Tibberton, although visiting skipper Craig Williams admitted that the best team had won on the night.

Honeysuckle Harriers visited Gnosall’s Horns without two of their five regular players and still came away with a stunning 1-5 win. Russ Woodhouse, debutant Adam Stone and Dean Smith put the Harriers into a 0-3 lead with wins over Dai Smith, Martyn Holford and Kevin Thackwell, although Jamie Wright’s win over Greg Quinn gave the home side a lifeline.

Oxygen to that line was finally switched off by Woodhouse and Smith against Thackwell and the Horns’s new signing Natalie Lane. Stone and Quinn then sealed the rout with a win over Holford and Wright.

The Pheasant took on the Wheatsheaf and honours were shared. Craig Hutchinson put the home team into the lead over Al Harvey, but the ‘Sheaf hit back through Mark Hodgkinson’s win over Gaz Davies. Alistair Griffiths made it 2-1 against Nigel Sandbrook, but Paul Skitt levelled by beating Luke Jones. An in-form Hodgkinson teamed up with Sandbrook to beat debutant Mike Jones and Davies to make it 2-3, but Hutchinson and Griffiths secured the point in the final frame.

King’s Head B came away with both points from their tussle with the Royal Navy Club and moved into outside contention for the Newport Pool League Plate title.

King’s Head A played the Haberdashers Arms in the final match of the night but, as has been a regular occurrence with the King’s Head in recent weeks, the result was not available as we closed for press. There were byes for the Shakespeare and Junction B.

WWFC reached a first ever final in the Newport Pool League when they overcame stubborn resistance from the Haberdashers Arms in their semi-final of the Neil Clark Consolation Shield at the Honeysuckle.

With the score locked at 3-3, Dave Holding came into the fray to seal the match for the Telford side and reach the final on Friday, July 8th at the Royal Navy Club. They will play the winners of the tie between Shakespeare and King’s Head A.
