HONEYSUCKLE REGROUP AND WIN FIRST NEWPORT POOL GAME

NEWPORT (Shropshire): A week is a long time in any sport and the Newport Pool League’s new team, the Honeysuckle, claimed their first win to return to zero points after incurring a two-point deduction for failing to show for their first week match last Wednesday.

Ross Richards-Jones, Marcus Thomas and Mark Benson put the ‘Suckle into a 0-3 lead against Shakespeare B and, despite a premature comeback by Kim Rigby and the Shake side in the first of the doubles racks, the ‘Suckle claimed both points in the final frame.

LSC at the Tav are top of the table after wiping out their local rivals, the Ralway Tavern, in Upper Bar without losing a frame. They are now just one rack ahead of both Market Drayton’s Stag and Newport Legion. The Stag trounced King’s Head A with the loss of one frame and the Legion repeated the score line in a marathon match against a disappointing Shakespeare A.

Junction B began the evening in joint fourth and maintained their good start to the season after coming back from 0-3 down to claim a draw against Knighton’s Haberdashers Arms. Paul Degg, Rich Bayliss and Vicky Winter put the visitors into an impressive lead, only for Ryan Morris to make it 1-3 and Frank James, Steve Purves and Mick Ashforth to join the battle in the doubles to level the score for the Norbury side. Junction B slip to sixth.

Pheasant B proved that last week’s victory over their A team was no fluke and Quinny’s disciples edged a tight match against the Navigation by the odd frame to stay in fourth place, with Scott Smith completing his 100% winning start to the season in both singles and doubles.

Pheasant A ensured that the Wheatsheaf remain pointless with a 1-5 victory at Chetwynd End. Horns hosted Junction A in the second all-Staffordshire clash and prevailed by the odd frame and King’s Head B got the better of the Royal Navy Club in the final match of the night by a similar 4-2 score line.
