NEWPORT LEGION MOVE TO THE TOP OF NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Six weeks into the new season and only two teams remain unbeaten in the Newport Pool League. Newport Legion are the new leaders after LSC at the Tav slumped to a shock 2-4 home defeat to Pheasant A. King’s Head A are also yet to lose a frame and hold fourth position after beating Shakespeare B, 1-5.

LSC hosted Pheasant A – the team they knocked out of the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy last week – and skipper Greg Heathcote had the vibe that they would struggle after a cruel run of luck.

In-offs cost him and Paul Cartledge a couple of frames against Ian Swinnerton and Ant Allen, although Andy Lewis had comfortably beaten Colin Smith to make it 1-2. Matt Mansell edged the frame against Ant Heathcote to make it 1-3 and, after Greg Heathcote and Cartledge had pulled the fifth frame back for the home side, Smith and Mansell did the damage to claim a shock win for the Pheasant.

Newport Legion eased through their home match against the Royal Navy Veterans without losing a frame. Andy Miles, Paul Lucas, Wayne Dodd and Mick Beech took the singles racks and the Legion won both the doubles frames, although the Navy were a player short and both a singles and doubles frame were gifted to the opposition.

Market Drayton’s Stag visited the Horns in Gnosall - the venue from where they won the title last season - and they managed to turn a 2-2 singles situation into a 2-4 win.

Pheasant B faced a tricky encounter against the neighbouring Railway Tavern and honours were shared in a tight encounter with Jack Dicken managing to finally silence Simon Walley in the first of the singles racks for the away side.

King’s Head A came away with both points from a 1-5 win at Shakespeare B. Russ Woodhouse got the better of Graham Tigwell to make it 1-0, but singles wins for Ed Keenan, Dan Owen and Mick Collins followed against Jess Hilditch, Barry Smith and Kim Rigby and the away side won both doubles frames.

The Navigation got the better of Shakespeare A in a tense match in Gnosall. Andy Potter levelled the match against Scott Smith after Andy Wakefield had lost the opener, but Neil Holford got the better of Neil Perkins in a safety marathon in frame three and Steve Whitlock rode his luck to beat Ross-Richards Jones in rack four before the home side snatched two marathon doubles frames.

Honours were shared in the all-Junction clash at Norbury and King’s Head B suffered a heavy 1-5 defeat to the Haberdashers at Chetwynd End. Royal Navy Seals pipped the Wheatsheaf, 4-2, in the final match of the night.
