· Manning and Allen remain kings of the doubles

MARKET DRAYTON (Shropshire): Market Drayton youngster Ricky Leese mastered his tactics to perfection to see off Graham Tigwell’s challenge in four frames to win the 2013 Joule’s Brewery Market Drayton Pool Open final at the Lord Hill on Thursday night.

Unfazed by a seven-ball Tigwell clearance and an outrageous fluke on the black in frame one, Leese stuck to his game plan of cautious safety play and no risks to win a gruelling second frame after a series of snookers. Thirty minutes of the match had passed before he potted his first ball! Another good clearance gave the youngster breathing space in the third frame and he looked set to make it 3-1 with a two-shot wrap-up in rack four before missing a vital pot on the black into the corner for the match.

Tigwell had one remaining red on the table with the black safe on the cushion. Rather than opt for a safety shot or put his red over the pocket, the Newport cue went on an all out attack, fired the red around the table and the white came to rest with the black now in a straightforward potting position. Leese held his nerve the second time around much to the delight of his parents and assembled local support at the Lord Hill to seal his second title.

Mick Manning and George Allen clinched a tight Joule’s Brewery Market Drayton Doubles Open final in four frames against Newport’s Ant and Greg Heathcote. The success marked Manning’s fifth successive doubles title, the local cue having won four successive Newport Open doubles titles to add to this success.

The pair edged a tight first frame with a useful Manning clearance and Allen did the same in frame two, as both frames developed into strategic battles for position. Greg Heathcote held his nerve to secure a useful clearance and a long black to pull the third frame back for the visiting duo, but the strategic battle for position in frame four edged in the home pair’s favour and the defending Newport Open doubles champions secured the winning pot to earn the trophy and the prize money.

“I would like to thank Joule’s Brewery for their sponsorship, the Lord Hill for their hospitality and all the players and supporters who have made this year’s tournament such a success,” said organiser Colin Pink.

Attention now switches to the Newport Pool Open, which will run throughout the summer months. Flyers and entry forms will be sent to local pubs and clubs in the coming days.
