INAUGURAL NEWPORT DARTS OPEN UNVEILED
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The ongoing success of the Newport Pool Open and friendly pressure from local darts players has steered local sports management consultant Neil Perkins of NDP Publicity Services to organise the inaugural Newport Darts Open.
Entry forms and details of the exciting new competition were sent to local pubs and bars this week and entries for the first competition of its kind close on Monday, August 29th.
The new singles-only competition will be open to players from miles around, provided that all matches are played within the confines of the TF10 postcode. The format will follow that adopted by the pool competition in that the draw will follow an FA Cup-style format and home players will be able to select the venue for the best-of-seven legs, 501 straight start matches.
Entry is £10 per person and it is the responsibility of the away player to contact the home drawn player to arrange the mutually convenient time and date for the match.
The first round draw will take place at the Railway Tavern at 20.00hrs on Tuesday, August 30th, just before the third round draw of the ongoing Carling Newport Pool Open.
“This is just what we were looking for,” said local Super League player and potential Open winner Eddie Austin. “We had something similar several years ago, but this is another exciting development for darts in the area.”
A new trophy will be funded from the prize fund and cash prizes for first, second and third and the highest checkout will be dependant on the number of entries.
Perkins is currently looking for a potential sponsor to boost the pot for finals’ night, which has already been booked for the Pheasant in Newport on Thursday, December 8th.
Landlord Paul Quinn has promised to turn the pub into a ‘darts fest’ for the evening and overhead television sets will be programmed in to the main board for the two semi-finals, third-place play-off and the final, which will take place over nine legs.
If you are interested in entering the competition and have not seen an entry form, please send a text message to 07831 123153.
