KING’S HEAD A ON VERGE OF MAIDEN NEWPORT POOL TITLE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Birthday boy Mick Collins lost his singles frame against Steve Whitlock, but the King’s Head A remained firmly on course for a maiden Newport & District Pool League title after beating Gnosall’s Navigation, 5-1, at Chetwynd End. Irene Whittington excelled in a tight doubles match to seal the vital three points for the champions elect.

The league leaders maintained a four-point league advantage, despite the fact that Tom Fisken’s Sutherland Arms side earned a similar 5-1 score line against King’s Head B, with Lyn Day putting a prize frame on the register for the league’s bottom side.

NRBL confirmed third place in the league with a comfortable 5-1 victory over a humbled LSC at the Tav. Greg Heathcote missed a corner black to put the visitors into the lead and the writing was on the wall for LSC when Mick Beech held his nerve to clear the table. Ian Roberts was in fine potting form against Antony Heathcote and the publican levelled the score with a stunning black double, much to the detriment of the fading former Newport Open Champion.

Colin Farge produced some stunning potting and positional play to make it 2-1 to the home side against an out-of-sorts Ben Longstaff and Colin Pink was never troubled in frame four against Andy Miles, as NRBL made it 3-1.

Neil Perkins attempted a six-ball clearance in rack five to put LSC back in the running, but he missed a tricky final black and Antony Heathcote duly sealed three points for the home side. Farge was again on form in rack six to humiliate the visitors.

Shakespeare A beat Wheatsheaf B, 4-2, to open the door to fourth place in the league for Junction A and Shakespeare C. Ben Clewes’s Upper Bar side beat the Royal Navy Club by the odd frame to storm into fourth place and Hyla Marklew’s Junction A also overtook LSC after beating Junction B, 4-2.

Honours were shared in a tight match between the Railway Tavern and the Plough at Woodseaves. Greg Quinn put the home side into the lead and Stu Morrey doubled the advantage. But the ‘Vicious Vickies’ had other ideas and Vicky Hipkins and Vicky Winter levelled the match at the expense of David Bristow and Adam Stone.

Morrey and Russ Porter put the home side into the driving seat for a draw against Tony Morris and Rich Bayliss, but the ‘Vicious Vickies’ again prevailed in rack six to force a draw.

The Shakespeare C side were held to a 3-3 draw by Gnosall’s Navigation in a re-arranged match from last week, while Wheatsheaf A trounced an out-of-sorts Shakespeare B without dropping a frame.

Please also remember that entries for the 2011 Carling Newport Pool Open close on Saturday, July 9th. Completed entry forms and all entry fees should be left for the Newport Pool Open, c/o Ian Roberts, at the Railway Tavern in Newport in the coming days. No entry fee means no entry to the competition.
