NRBL AND SUTHY START WELL IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Newport Royal British Legion (NRBL) and the Sutherland Arms at Tibberton were the leaders of the 2010/2011 Newport & District Pool League after the first round of fixtures last Wednesday night.

Colin Farge, Luke Hayward, Colin Pink and Antony Heathcote settled the match in the NRBL’s favour against the Shakespeare B, but Sam Stewart-Frost and Kim Rigby pulled a frame back for the ladies’ home side.

Tom Fisken’s Tibberton team earned a similar 5-1 scoreline against Steve Whitlock’s shell-shocked Navigation side in Gnosall, while the King’s Head A, the Plough at Woodseaves, Shakespeare C and Shakespeare A all made 4-2 winning starts to the marathon season.

The Shakespeare’s new C team disposed of the talented Junction A. Ben Clewes remained compos mentis to beat Norbury skipper Hyla Marklew and set the new team on their way to a 4-2 win, with Ade Darell and Ray Talbot also adding to the points’ tally.

Newport Open ladies’ champion Irene Whittington and Carling Newport Open champion Mick Collins were two of the winners in the King’s Head A’s 4-2 win over the Wheatsheaf A at Upper Bar. Graham Tigwell also got on the score sheet for the home side and Jamie James supported Collins in the final doubles rack.

Andy Potter and Dan and Luke Brennan were on form against the Navy Club, but Paul Burton and Dave Marshall blotted their copybook to hand the Navy Club a lifeline in a tight match, which went in favour of the away side.

Honours were shared in the clash between the Railway Tavern and the King’s Head B. Greg Quinn, Adam Stone and Stu Morrey put the Railway into a 3-0 lead at Chetwynd End, but Rob Patterson, Lucy Hennessey, Lyn Day and Louise Anyon hit back to snatch a surprise point for the home side.

Lilleshall Sports Centre fought back from 0-2 down to force a draw at Wheatsheaf B. Jack and Luke Jones put the new home side 2-0 ahead, but Greg Heathcote and Neil Perkins redressed the balance in the next two singles’ racks.

Perkins and Ian Roberts put the visitors in sight of an unlikely win in rack five, but the Jones duo managed to hold their nerve against Heathcote and Will Dorsett to earn a point for the Chetwynd Aston side.
