NEWPORT (Shropshire): Hinstock’s Colin Pink will play Newport’s Mick Collins in the 2010 Carling Newport Pool Open final at the Royal Navy Club, Bellman’s Yard, on Wednesday night (October 20th).

Pink will be aiming to become the first player to win the coveted Newport Open trophy on two occasions, although the singles match will follow the final of the Fusion Hair and Beauty Newport’s Women’s Open and the Worthington’s Newport Doubles Open.

Newport-based county player Irene Whittington faces Lyn Day in the women’s final, which starts at 19.45hrs. This match will be followed by the doubles final between Hinstock’s Colin Pink and Market Drayton’s Mick Manning and the Whitchurch duo of Cyril Evans and Brian Sumner from 20.50hrs.

Refreshments will then be served before the major match of the night rounds off proceedings. The third final will be followed by the presentation of trophies to the winners and cash prizes for the winners and runners-up in the Carling and Worthington’s competitions.

The presentation of the league trophy to the Newport Royal British Legion team, winners of the 2009/2010 Newport & District Pool League, will also take place, as well as the handing out of the Desert England Trophy to the most improved player in the Newport Pool League last season. The winner of the ladies’ competition will also win a full makeover at Fusion Hair and Beauty, which will be presented by proprietor Catrina Roach.

Spectators are welcome and it is hoped that members of all the teams in the Newport & District Pool League will support the evening. A full house adds that extra special atmosphere to a finals’ night.

Colin Pink booked his place in a second Newport Pool Open final with a 3-1 victory over Telford’s Luke Hayward at the King’s Head last Friday evening.

It was a disappointing two days for the Telford player, who had been beaten with his father Charlie by Whitchurch’s Brian Sumner and Cyril Evans in the second semi-final of the Worthington’s Newport Doubles Open the previous evening.

Mick Collins could have sealed his place in the final in just three frames, but Stafford’s Chris Broomhall came back well, took his chances and levelled the match at 2-2. The match went to a black ball decider, with Collins reaching his second final in three years in the thrilling final rack.
