SUTHERLAND ARMS EDGE CLEAR IN SECOND AS SHAKE FALTER

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Sutherland Arms took another giant step towards finishing second in the Newport & District Pool League after beating the New Inn 5-1 at Tibberton.

The village side have now moved four points clear of Shakespeare A, who were held to a 3-3 draw by the resurgent Lilleshall Sports Centre. Home skipper Richard Young set the Upper Bar team on their way only for Ben Longstaff to level the scores in frame two.

Dan Brennan held his nerve in rack three to push the Shakespeare 2-1 in front, but Neil Perkins pipped Andy Potter on the black to level the match. Perkins and Neil Haseley prevailed in frame five to earn the visitors at least a draw, but a stunned Longstaff missed a straight pot into the middle to seal all three points for LSC and Potter was able to pick up the pieces to snatch the draw and keep the Shakespeare in the hunt for second place.

It was a night of mixed fortunes for the King’s Head. The B team played well, only to lose all six frames to the Junction A, and Mick Collins’s A team repeated the score line against the Junction B. “I threatened to sack the whole team after last week’s debacle and they have all bounced back in the best possible way,” said a delighted Collins.

Audco at the Shake were 3-0 up against the Navy Club and somehow managed to throw away the three points. “We got the draw, but it feels like a defeat,” moaned Matt Tonks.

Shakespeare B held the Navy Club to a 3-3 draw in a match that had been postponed during the home venue’s recent refurbishment, while Audco at the Shake were scheduled to play their postponed match against the Railway Tavern last night.

Norman Riley set the Navy Club on their way, only for Sam Frost and Hazel Ford-Lewis to redress the balance for the home side. Alan Pritchett levelled the scores in the fourth singles’ rack and honours were shared in the doubles, with Pritchett and Riley winning the sixth frame to save the Navy blushes.

The match between the NRBL and the Railway Tavern was postponed.

Please also note that entries for the 2010 Carling Newport Pool Open and the Fusion Hair and Beauty Women’s Open close in two weeks time. Players are advised to fill in the forms at their local venues as soon as possible to enable landlords to return entries in good time for the first round draw on Monday, July 5th.
