NEWPORT LEGION ‘GALACTICOS’ SECURE POOL LEAGUE TITLE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Newport Royal British Legion (NRBL) clinched the

Newport & District Pool League title with five matches remaining, after beating Tibberton’s Sutherland Arms, 4-2, on Wednesday night.

Mick Beech and Colin Pink set the home side on their way with wins in the first two frames, but Paul Trevor was pegged back in frame three. Former Newport Open Champion, Anthony Heathcote, cleared the table to make it 3-1 to the home side and Trevor and Pink secured the league title to begin the celebrations with victory in rack five.

Beech and Heathcote lost the sixth rack in front of a sizeable crowd, but the former Audco stars had done enough to retain their pool title. “I feel like I am having another dream,” said a jubilant Paul Trevor. “We are scared of no-one now,” boasted Beech. “Bring on the Newport Pool Open. We are ready!”

Lilleshall Sports Centre secured a useful 4-2 victory over the cup-winning Junction A. Marcus Thomas was in sensational potting form to pip Sion Richards and Neil Perkins managed to snatch the black to put the home side 2-0 up. Ian Mason held his nerve to pip Ben Longstaff for frame three to keep the visitors in the hunt and Keith Rogers won a close encounter against Neil Haseley to level the match.

The home side were in deep trouble in rack five, with Mason and Rogers covering four of the six pockets with yellow balls. But a useful visit by Perkins put the home side back in the frame and Haseley held his nerve with two shots to seal an unlikely frame win to earn at least a draw for LSC.

Junction skipper Hyla Marklew was quickly out of the blocks in the final frame and the away side built up a good position, but Thomas took full advantage of a foul and two shots to seal a sensational clearance, which mentor Paul Trevor would have been proud of!

Richard Young’s Shakespeare A climbed to within two points of the Sutherland Arms and second place with a 4-2 away win at the New Inn in Stafford Street, while Mick Ashforth’s jubilant Junction B broke Wheatsheaf hearts with a 5-1 demolition at Norbury to move the Staffordshire side within four points of their Chetwynd Aston rivals.

It was a miserable evening for both King’s Head sides. Mick Collins threatened to sack the entire squad after the B team were crushed at the Navigation and his former high-flying A team went down 5-1 to a defiant Swan at Lower Bar.

The Navy Club’s visit to the Shakespeare B was postponed until the home venue reopens after the pre-World Cup facelift and the Audco at the Shake’s home match against the Railway Tavern will also be played next week.
