HEATHCOTE GOES MARCHING ON IN NEWPORT POOL OPEN
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Defending Carling Newport Pool Open champion, Anthony Heathcote, booked his place in the semi-final of this year’s competition with a hard-earned 3-2 victory over the in-form Ben Clewes.
Clewes shocked the champion by snatching the first frame, after Heathcote missed a simple black into a middle pocket, but the Newport Legion player stepped up a gear to win the next two after Clewes had fouled and given away two shots. Heathcote missed a black in the fourth frame to seal the match and Clewes duly levelled the frame scores.
The tension was paramount in frame five and Clewes had two shots on the black to clinch an upset. He set himself up for the pot with the first shot and then jawed the final black in a middle pocket. Heathcote was clearly rattled, but he managed to pot his last three colours and potted the final black with a tight cut into the middle to seal a tense match.
Telford’s Luke Hayward shocked Newport’s John Williams with a 3-0 win in their delayed third round match, while Market Drayton Open champion, Brian Sumner, cruised past Hayward’s father Charlie to book a quarter-final meeting with Whitchurch rival Cyril Evans.
Evans and Sumner joined forces in the Worthington’s Newport Doubles Open to see off Newport’s Andrew Potter and Dave Marshall in straight frames to book a meeting with Colin Pink and Mick Manning in the first semi-final.
Newport’s Mick Collins and Ed Keenan dropped a frame against Stuart Smith and John Digby in their 3-1 quarter-final win and now face snooker players John Williams and Paul Trevor in the second semi-final.
All quarter-final singles and semi-final doubles ties must be played by Monday, September 28th. Results should be sent by text message to 07831 123153, clearly stating the names of players and the score.
The finals’ night for both the Carling and Worthington’s Open competitions will take place at the Royal Navy Club, Bellman’s Yard, Newport, on Wednesday, October 21st.
