WOODHOUSE THRASHES BEECH IN CARLING NEWPORT POOL OPEN

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Newport’s Russ Woodhouse produced the shock of the 2009 Carling Newport Pool Open so far by beating the outspoken and highly-rated Legion league player Mick Beech in four frames.

Woodhouse produced some solid pool to see off one of the pre-tournament favourites and push himself into the last eight. Beech had already beaten Stafford’s Will Edge on his way to the last 16, but he was no match for the experienced Woodhouse in the pressure cooker environment of their last 16 match.

Defending Carling Newport Pool Open champion Anthony Heathcote booked his place in the last eight of the competition with a hard-earned 3-1 victory over Dave Marshall at the Newport Legion. Marshall won the first frame and had a chance to level the match at 2-2, before Heathcote closed out the tie.

Stafford league player Brendon Ruttledge cruised into the last eight with a surprisingly easy 3-0 victory over the ever-improving Andy Potter. Work commitments forced Richard Priest to forfeit his second round tie against Telford’s Luke Hayward, who faces Newport’s John Williams this weekend for a place in the last eight.

Nick Clewley and Neil Perkins were never at the races against Colin Pink and Mick Manning at the Newport Legion in the first Worthington Newport Doubles Open quarter-final.

A foul break by Perkins and an in-off by Clewley gave Manning an easy task to seal the first frame and a poor shot selection at the business end of frame two by Perkins put his partner under pressure and enabled Manning to clean up again.

The North Shropshire snooker player was in great form in the third rack as well and some excellent potting sealed a comfortable 3-0 win for the Hinstock players. “I could have stayed at home tonight,” gloated Pink. “Mick did all the work.”

All third round ties are to be played by this Sunday (September 13th). Results should be sent by text message to 07831 123153, clearly stating the names of players and the score.
