AUDCO A FINISH LEAGUE-WINNING SEASON UNBEATEN

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Audco A’s 5-1 victory over the Wheatsheaf in the final week of matches in the Newport Pool League ensured that the ‘galacticos’ finished the league season unbeaten. They were 14 points clear at the top of the table when postponed matches were added into the equation.

After celebrating receiving the Coors Trophy for the second season before their game against the Chetwynd Aston side at the Legion, Colin Pink, Mick Beech, Andy Lycett and Paul Trevor were firing on all cylinders to complete the season in superb style.

Their nearest league rivals, King’s Head, completed their fixture card with a walk-over win, but the Railway Tavern finished a resurgent campaign with another impressive victory over an out-of-sorts Lilleshall Sports Centre at Upper Bar.

Dave Price potted the black early in his frame against Ben Clewes to gift the home side a 1-0 lead, but Greg Heathcote never gave Gary Owen a chance in frame two and the score was level.

Neil Perkins dug himself out of an early hole against Andy Richardson and then threw it all away with two reckless shots to give the Tavern a 2-1 lead, only for Ben Longstaff to stave off a James Searles’ fight back to draw the match level at 2-2.

But Ian Roberts and Clewes managed to squeeze through the first doubles rack and Richardson teamed up with Kim ‘Wan Loi’ Yeo in the final frame. The Chinese was in superb form and an excellent clearance with two shots was sufficient to see off Heathcote and Longstaff and give the home side all the points and confirm their fifth place in the league table.

Illnesses forced Shakespeare B to concede their much-vaunted game against Shakespeare A, while Wrockwardine Wood Football Club beat Junction B, 5-1, to confirm fourth place in the league. The Navy Club were held to a 3-3 draw at Navigation A.

Any games that had not been rearranged by July 15th have been awarded to the teams who were let down at the time of the original fixture, with a 4-2 score line. Teams are welcome to play the games at a later date, but the result will not affect the final league table.
