KING’S HEAD KEEP UP THE PRESSURE IN NEWPORT POOL

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The King’s Head kept up the pressure on runaway league leaders Audco A after the latest round of fixtures in the Newport & District Pool League.

Luckless Shakespeare B were put to the sword, 6-0, at Chetwynd End, although a 5-1 victory for Audco A against the Navigation A at Gnosall means that the King’s Head remain two points adrift of last year’s title winners, having played two games more.

Junction A continued their impressive form at Norbury with a 4-2 victory over the Wheatsheaf, which lifts the Staffordshire side to third in the league table. Fading Audco B slipped to fourth on frame difference after losing at home, 4-2, to a resurgent Railway Tavern. “The ‘Tav’ played very well to be honest,” admitted Audco skipper Jack Jones.

Lilleshall Sports Centre survived a mighty scare against bottom side, Navigation B, who arrived with only three players. Lilleshall skipper Dave Price allowed the visitors to hire a spectating Stacey Stainer for the evening to make up the numbers and the decision very nearly backfired.

Price put the home side 1-0 up when Peter Dickinson accidentally potted the black, but Steve Taylor won a messy frame to level the scores. Ben Longstaff cruised past Anthony Cox to put the home side 2-1 to the good, but a shocked Stainer watched in disbelief as she sealed the fourth frame with only two visits to the table - when a hapless Stuart Weeden potted the black early in the frame.

Price and Longstaff put the home side in sight of the win in the first doubles’ encounter and a returning Neil Perkins calmed the nerves with a useful clearance in the final rack to clinch the 4-2 win.

In the final match of the evening, the Shakespeare A were held to a 3-3 draw by the ever-improving Navy Club.

All match forms are to be delivered to Ian Roberts and/or Dave Wilkinson at the Railway Tavern in Newport and match results sent immediately by text message to 07831 123153.
