SHAKE B GIRLS SHOCK JUNCTION B IN POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Shakespeare B team rocked the Junction B at Norbury with a surprise 4-2 during the 11th round of matches in the Newport Pool League.
The ‘gals’ secured only their second win of the season, with the help of Ade Darrell, boyfriend of Shakespeare landlady Hazel Ford-Lewis. He put the visitors into a 1-0 lead with victory over Stu Till and Hannah Evans and Lewis made it 3-0 with wins over a stunned John Owen and Sonny Taylor.
The Junction called upon the experience of Terry Taylor to steady the ship and he pipped Kim Rigby in frame four to give the Junction a lifeline. Till and Owen also won the fifth frame with a win over Darrell and Rigby, but Ford-Lewis and Evans were the heroes of the hour in the final frame and secured the unlikely three points by seeing off a shell-shocked Mick Ashforth and Terry Taylor.
Audco B won a hard-fought contest against the Navy Club at their new Honeysuckle venue, although the Bellman’s Yard team were unlucky not to snatch a point from the former league leaders. The King’s Head climbed back into third place in the league with a 4-2 home win over Navigation A at Chetwynd End.
Wrockwardine Wood Football Club fell to a disappointing 4-2 home defeat to the Junction A, with the Norbury side beginning to climb the table after a sluggish start to the season. The Railway Tavern continued their recent improvement with a 4-2 win against Shakespeare A and that was sufficient to put them level on points with the Wheatsheaf and Lilleshall Sports Centre in the league table.
Lilleshall Sports Centre’s home tie against the Wheatsheaf was postponed and the two teams played their outstanding Neil Clark Memorial Trophy quarter-final at Chetwynd Aston instead. The match went to a tie-break frame, with Nick Clewley the hero of the hour for the visitors by sealing the tie and a semi-final match against the Shakespeare A in the seventh rack.
Clewley beat Nigel Sandbrook in the opening frame to put the visitors 1-0 ahead and Dave Price edged Ian Trevor in frame two to give LSC a commanding cushion. But Al Harvey dismissed Ben Longstaff in frame three and Paul Skitt levelled the match by pipping Neil Hazeley. The tension was paramount.
Honours were shared in the nervy doubles matches, with Longstaff and Hazeley redeeming themselves in the fifth frame and this set the scene for the tie-break frame showdown. Clewley duly managed to beat Sandbrook for a second time to book LSC’s place in the semi-finals.
The league-leading Audco A have now confirmed that they will play all home matches at the Royal British Legion Club, following the closure of the Audco Sports & Social Club. The Audco B team will play at the Honeysuckle, although both teams will retain their original names.
All match forms are to be delivered to Ian Roberts and/or Dave Wilkinson at the Railway Tavern in Newport and match results sent immediately by text message to 07831 123153.
